Wow, summer is already gone! It’s been a busy one for me:
1) I took 2 intensive introductory German classes and got A’s in both.
2) I trained almost every day for the Susan G Komen 3-day walk for breast cancer research that comes to DC Oct. 3-5. It’s 60 miles over 3 days, and the training is really ramping up now. Last weekend my friends and I walked 17 miles on Saturday and 13 on Sunday. Then I died, of course.
3) I took lots and lots and lots of photos - of my cats.
4) My Macbook is not doing so well, so I “had” to upgrade to an iMac. It’s pretty flippin’ sweet - and the free iPod Touch that came with it isn’t bad either.
5) Since I’m using most of my vacation for Germany later this fall, I haven’t really had a vacation this summer. But I did go to the mountains in Virginia to visit my grandparents a few weekends ago. Here was the most active thing I encountered during my stay.
Today is my dad’s 58th 57th birthday. When I was 14 and in the first stages of what would eventually become the full-on “boy crazies”, he gave me only one piece of advice: Never trust a man who wears flip flops.
Sounds silly, but it made a lasting impact. To this day I can’t seriously date someone who wears flip flops when they’re not at the beach. My sisters feel the same way. So yes, dad, we did sometimes listen to you, but only about the really important stuff.

My dad and me, August 1982.
Happy birthday, pops!

He doesn’t help me with my homework, instead he wants to sleep all day.

“You will have more work than you will know what to do with.” - Virgo horoscope last week
Today at my part-time retail job, about an hour before the end of my 8-hour shift, once of my coworkers said “You know, I think I just hit the wall where I just don’t want to talk to any more people.” It’s a good term, “hit the wall.” I feel like I’m head-butting it right now.
The past few weeks — heck, the past few months — have been upside-down, topsy-turvy, drive-you-crazy busy. I moved to a new apartment, work is getting busier and therefore more stressful, and a couple of new freelance projects have come my way. And it’s only going to get busier since I start my German classes at the end of the month and step up my training for the 3-day Susan G Komen breast cancer walk in DC this October (but that’s a whole other post).
Anyway, with so much going on, and considering my job involves a lot of writing, it’s hard to make myself do it here during my off-time. But I hope to break through this mental wall and update more often.
In the meantime, here’s a photo of Flight of Conchords that I took at their concert last night. Enjoy!

Hi!

Long time no see. Things are OK around here. Lots of changes are afoot — new job, visitors at the house, and as of today, a new apartment (OK, the apartment is not available for another few weeks, but it is definitely mine).
I don’t know about you, but so far 2008 has brought a lot of introspection and self-reflection for me. Trying to figure out how I got here and where I want to go next. My life isn’t bad, but I think there is room for improvement, both inside and out.
So I’m downsizing to a smaller and (much) cheaper apartment which is within walking distance of my job. I’m also going to do what I should have done in college and finally learn German (I took 2 semesters and dropped it because I had no foresight that knowing more than one language might be an asset). I plan on giving more attention to my creative side and also to my dog.
My goal is to come out on the other side of 2008 with a better outlook, or at least more peace of mind that I’m living my life to the fullest — and that’s really all I could ask for.
Reason #582 of Why I Love the Internet: Making international friends that I would never meet otherwise, and getting fun packages to boot.
For the past few months, I’ve been indulging my penchant for all thing French with magazines sent from France. I originally started this when I signed up for a one-time international magazine swap through decor8, one of my must-visit-daily design blogs. I was paired with Aude in Paris, and we’ve continued swapping our favorite mags about every other month. I think of it as a modern-day pen pal, except we send pretty pictures in lieu of actual letters. I send Domino, Blueprint, and sometimes other shelter magazines; I receive French Elle and Marie Claire Maison, plus more.
This month I got an extra-special package from Aude — Marie Claire Maison, French Elle and Maison Cote Sud, plus French chocolate and mini muffins. When I opened the box, I spent about 5 minutes looking over everything oohing and awing “Oh, cuuuute!” I can’t wait for this weekend when I can sit down with a glass of wine and pore over my magasins français.

OK, how can anyone look at those little pursed lips and not melt? Welcome to the world, Rebecca Belle Catlow (courtesy of my good friends Rik & Wassa).
