Advice from a man I will never meet
My dad is particularly interested in my German classes, since he himself studied it at Berea College in Kentucky in the early 70s (although all he can say now is “Das ist verboten”). His professor was a Lithuanian who had come to the US during World War II. According to my dad, he taught German because it was the one skill he could use to make a living - but he hated the language because he hated the Germans.
Anyway, my dad mentioned to me the other day that his professor had suggested that, in order for his students to get used to hearing native German speakers, they should listen to Deutsche Welle radio network on a short-wave radio. Today you can stream live radio from Deutsche Welle over the Web. I can’t understand most of what is said, but I know about every other word, and can get the jist of it. I just listened to a story about Kodak, and now they’re giving the weather report. Thanks for the tip, Mr. German Professor from 1972!
