Go There Now: St. Nikolai Memorial

    Hamburg, Germany, November 2008

St. Nikolai was a Lutheran church that was destroyed during the Allied bombing in World War II, and today stands as a memorial to all those who died in Hamburg during that time. It’s incredibly beautiful and moving, much more so than the Kaiser Wilhelm church in Berlin, I think. There’s a museum about WWII Hamburg beneath it, and also an elevator that you can take to the top for expansive views of the city, all for a very nominal fee.
